What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a holistic medicine practiced in China for over 2000 years that treats the mind, body and spirit. The Chinese discovered that energy runs along specific pathways on the body’s surface. These pathways are called channels. Channels can be seen as a network of rivers irrigating the tissues and the internal organs. The rivers can become obstructed like a dam, resulting in pain and depleting energy.
The body naturally responds when acupuncture points are stimulated, unblocking the obstructions at the dams and restoring regular flow through the channels. From a medical perspective, acupuncture works by stimulating the body to release natural pain reducing hormones regulating the internal systems. Serotonin and endorphins promote natural healing by changing the experience of pain and reducing inflammation.
Acupuncture alleviates pain by increasing blood flow and circulation into areas of tension. This allows the nervous system to relax and the lymphatic system to drain, resulting in a strengthened immune system. Acupuncture treatment reestablishes harmony and creates balance in the body.
